As someone who loves to watch sermons in the place of reading the bible. There really is no replacement for reading the word for yourself. The wisdom given by God is invaluable. I know that the bible can be hard to read and that it’s not looked at as everyone’s favorite past time (when it should be). But reading the bible has real-life impacts.
God talks to us through the word of God, especially as a new Christian. Many of us are not adept at just hearing the voice of God outright, and honestly many of us aren’t gifted to hear him in that way. Which is why God has given us so many other channels in which we can get direction from Him.
Reading the bible, breaks the enemies hold over you
All of us have strongholds, things that distract us from God’s purpose for us. Maybe it’s a childhood trauma that you revisit when you go to bed at night. Maybe it’s having things, like cars, or money. Perhaps it’s vanity. Being perfect and pretty. It could even be pride or just anxiety over the unknown. I suffer from more than one of these.
Whatever it is, the word of God has the power to break through all that noise. It tears down the lies that the enemy has planted in your mind. Lies that you think are just character traits. Just part of your identity. When in reality they are really just lies that the enemy has instilled in us to keep us from having victory in life. Someone needs to hear this, having a bad attitude isn’t your character, it’s a stronghold.
The enemy has been working on us since we were children. Building up these lies and fortifying them with events and other people’s hurtful words. In order to breakdown these strongholds we need to be coming to the word of God regularly.
And once the stronghold is broken, you need to keep reading to make sure the enemy doesn’t get the chance to build new ones.
Reading your bible prepares you for the enemy’s future attack
The enemy is not omnipresence but instead works in cycles. God may have placed you a storm to get you to the next place. But the enemy is there to make sure everything that everything that can go wrong in your storm, goes horribly horribly wrong.
Even though a lot of people rather steer clear of talking about the devil, myself included. I believe that it’s imperative that we all understand that we have an enemy who wants us to fail in our purpose and die without the gift of salvation.
He attacks us by applying pressure to whatever situation we are going through in life. You decide to give up porn, here comes the enemy with pictures of naked people on your timeline.
You decide to think positively and focus on God? Here comes the enemy whispering in your ear that you will always feel this depression, that it’s inescapable. That, maybe God wants you to be depressed? Or perhaps it is just a part of God’s plan for you, that depression is just you?
But when you read the word, you have the tools to battle the enemy. Words that you can say to yourself to remind yourself of God’s promises for you. To remind yourself of your power. You are no longer fighting alone. The bible even says, resist the devil and he will flee.
God gave us power over the enemy. He told us we now have a choice, either we live like sheep, powerless to defend ourselves. Or we arm ourselves with the word of God.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.Ephesians 6:12
You can arm yourself with the word of God by watching sermons and reading Christian self-help books, but the word of God helps to solidify that information in our minds. It gives us revelation.
The enemy will always bother us in an attempt to break down our relationship with God. But eventually, with enough practice and reading of God’s word. When the enemy comes we will immediately recognize it as an attack and tell him to shut up and move on. Not waste our time dealing with the enemy.
Reading your bible gives you your own relationship with God
I remember in the past, I would just rely on the words of others to support my relationship with God. Let me tell you, people don’t always know what they are talking about.
Listening to people in the past, actually caused me to distance myself from God. I felt like I needed to change and start doing all these great works. I thought I needed to earn God’s love, which is not the case at all.
God’s approval and love are given as a gift.
When you deepen your relationship with God, you will begin to see who God is to you. You will begin to know God for yourself so you won’t need to rely on the words of others.
For me personally, I am still working out who God is to me. But with the consistent seeking of God, I am starting to understand who God is. Little by little, He is revealing Himself.
When you don’t have your own relationship with God, sometimes people will try to tell you who God is to them, but God is different things for different people. I found that when I didn’t have any knowledge of the bible and just went off of what other people said, my journey with God wasn’t fruitful, because I didn’t know who He was for myself.
It gives you direction for when you need help
Sometimes when we read the word, we don’t even realize we need help until the Holy Spirit points out how the different scriptures that relate to our situation.
I remember having anxiety one night and decided to ignore it and just power through reading the bible. I read about Jesus’s last words to his disciplines. He said that we are a part of Him and that He is a part of us, and for some strange reason those words began to cover me in a blanket of peace. It was such a surreal experience like the peace wouldn’t leave me, and I just felt safe. I still don’t fully understand how or why, but I know that God gave me His peace when I needed it.
Reading the word allows for the Holy Spirit to direct us to things that God is trying to help us with.
I think we should also read with a purpose. Reading just to read the bible isn’t always beneficial to us. Sometimes we need to look up scriptures specifically for what we are going through, in order to get the healing we require. I think we should all be going to the Word of God, on a daily basis. Joyce Meyers says it’s like food for the soul. Sometimes in life we may miss a meal but it’s not very often. That’s how I like to approach the bible. In order to give my soul the food that it needs to thrive, I shouldn’t miss my bible study time often.
