I think doubt is something everyone struggles with or has struggled with when it comes to belief in God. Questioning what is faith, and what it means to be faithful It’s okay to have questions and to start out a little shaky. And I’m here to explain why.
The bible tells that we need to have faith in order to receive our eternal life in death. That the only way to heaven is through faith in Jesus.
That those who don’t have faith, will be turned away from God. So I think as Christians two questions come to mind.
Will God accept me If I have a little doubt? And Is my faith enough?
What is Faith?
I think faith needs to be defined in order to answer this question.
A good definition of faith can be found in Hebrews 11: 1
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.Hebrews 11:1
So basically Faith means believing in and having your hope in a future that has not yet come to past. And to break that down even further, it’s about having hope and a belief that God will come back for us. That we will go to heaven. God will take care of us. And that God has a plan for our lives on earth, a plan that will give us victory.
When we first start out, I think all of us have small belief. Not knowing if God is even real. Wondering, If you are just praying to nothing-ness. And that’s okay.
But the fact that God moved your heart enough, that you decided to try. Is a big deal. Just that simple step, takes a great deal of belief.
Belif in God works within Doubt
I think a lot of us, think that the opposite of faith is doubt, but in all actuality, doubt is needed in order to have faith. If we knew for a fact that God was real we wouldn’t need faith.
Literally the whole basis of Christianity is built on the faith, that Jesus Christ came to free us from our sins. Believing that you are in right standing with God. Faith is everything in your Christian life.
I mean to be honest, the only real proof of what happened are accounts from thousands of years ago given in the bible. Accounts that to non-christian minds promote sexism and sometimes killing. Accounts that have tales about people getting swallowed whole by fish. Things that seem impossible. It takes faith to even try to believe it. So you’re on the right track!
God loves you and will take care of you even when your belief is small. He will nurture your belief until you become a Christian Powerhouse. A Christian so fruitful that you won’t even question God’s hands in your life.
The Opposite of Faith is a lack of action, not doubt.
So the true enemy of belief is not doubt, but in-activity. Saying you believe in Jesus, but won’t pick up your bible and read some of the scriptures. Saying you believe in God, but you won’t go after that job that you think God has for you.
You won’t pray because you think God won’t hear you. Or you won’t go to church because you think you’re not up to the standards of “real” church people.
Not even trying to understand your neighbor or trying to act out on love and not anger.
This is the true enemy of Faith. Not doubt, but staying stuck in your thoughts and worldly wisdom. Continuing in your old ways, and not even trying to trust God with your life.
Belief in God is an outwards action. It’s trying to be better than you were in the past. It’s reading the word of God and really trying to believe. Or it’s going to church. It’s taking action. Not being stuck in fear and doubt of the unknown.
It’s about acting out what you think God is telling you to do
I don’t think anyone truly knows that it’s God talking to them or it’s God’s hands controlling things until after it’s all said and done. Or if they super mature in their walk with Christ. Like Paul, from the bible mature.
But when they thought they heard a word from God, they acted on it, and they tried, and they succeeded. Make sure it’s from God though, and that your actions are in line with Jesus’s teachings.
Honestly, God is just looking to see, who is willing to come to Him with their problems? Who is willing to work on their relationship? Who is willing to talk with a God that they are not entirely sure exist?
Faith is not lazy
Just take the first step. That’s all that God wants. He wants you to move, and if you turn the wrong way, He will guide you to the right way.
So you accepted Jesus into your life? Now it’s time to walk out on faith and make a move.
Read your bible, go to church, talk with God often and about everything. Chasing after God will give you results.
Faith is not about not having doubt, but being able to still come to God even when you do doubt.
And slowly, as you start walking out on faith, your faith will grow. You will begin to see God’s hands in everything you do. You will begin to recognize when He is talking to you.
And You will begin to have a genuine relationship with God. It takes time and commitment. Filled with ups and downs, but seeing God’s victory realized, seeing your victory realized is all worth it in the end.
