Finding and getting the perfect textbook to study Korean with can be a daunting task. Trying to pick out the perfect one. And then spending a crazy amount on a textbook, when you don’t even know if it will work is frustrating, to say the least. In this post, I’m taking out all the frustration. Here are 4 free online Korean Language textbooks that you can use to get started.
1. Talk to Me in Korean
This online resource is one of the most popular Korean Language textbooks ever. Their textbooks are literally everywhere in South Korean book stores. They have pdf versions of their lessons online as well as a podcast to go with each lesson. So not only do you get the written out explanations but you get to hear them explain it. The lessons all build on one another so don’t skip any!
The textbook has 9 levels so far and they are still building on it. Click Here, to go to their website. You will be asked to make an account and from there you can begin learning Korean through the learning center tab.
2. Korean from Zero
This textbook is amazing for learning Korean. The writing isn’t dry and it makes learning Korean very fun.
UPDATE: The company actually took down the pdf form of the book but it is still available via online lessons for free, sort of like how TTMIK is. Click here to access their online lessons.
3. Korean Grammar in Use ~ Beginner
This Korean language textbook is great for learning beginner Korean grammar. And for getting the basic grammar structure down.
It’s a very dry textbook, in my opinion, giving the facts in a concise manner and then promptly moving on to the next topic. But it is highly recommended by everyone I know.
I personally didn’t use this resource as much as I used the others but people always rave about this textbook. So I thought I should add the digital textbook of it. Click here, for access to the free digital copy of the book.
4. Korean Language Institute of Yonsei University – Korean Language Textbook
This book was made by Yonsei University, one of the top universities in South Korea. I haven’t used this textbook myself, but I know many many people who swear by this textbook.
It is set up like your typical school language learning textbook, so you won’t be getting any slang in your vocabulary or colloquialisms.
Through the download link, you can get both the PDF and the audio files. Click Here, to download the free PDF and audio files.
I hope this post has been helpful, and you find a textbook that works best for you! I say try each one and see which is best for your particular learning style.
For me personally, right now I am using the Wild Korean textbook and it’s great for casual conversations. But some of the vocabulary given is a little mature so use it at your own discretion! Anywho, happy studying~
Also for some great speaking practice, you should sign up for Italki! Italki is a great site that gives you one-on-one language lessons/ speaking practice for as little as $5 per session. I personally use it for Korean speaking practice. And I love how I get undivided attention and the person is paid to help me become a better language speaker. And all for $5 or more!
