If you think that a life of abundance is unattainable let me tell you that a life of abundance is fully attainable. That is, once you have the right mindset.
A lot of the time when we think about living a life of abundance we think of care-free and materialistic living. But in reality, it’s much more than that.
So in this post we are going to take a deep dive into what it actually means to live a life of abundance.
What I prayed for….
I prayed that I live a life accepting of abundance and isn’t afraid to live in peace and happiness.
Well because as a black woman living in America, I’ve come to the realization that I am scared of living a life of abundance. Scared to just be happy for fear that something may come and take that happiness away. Which is often the case, if only momentarily.
I’m scared to rest and let God take over. I feel like I always need to be doing something. Always working towards purpose. Always moving.
I found myself constantly on guard and not really allowing myself to fully live in the moment.
And I brought this to God because only He can give me the wisdom needed to break away from that mindset.
This wisdom is coming from what God has revealed to me. I’ve been praying for a life of abundance for a little while now and I have received wisdom on the topic and wanted to share it with you all.
This wisdom is not all-encompassing, and I will continue to pray on it. But I just wanted to share what I’ve found out so far.
1. Life is never going to be perfect and that’s okay
After reading about all the people in the bible. One person that really stuck out to me was Joseph. Joseph’s story had many ups and downs. From getting a vision for his life to getting sold into slavery by his brothers. To becoming head of his master’s household, to getting accused of rape. From going to prison to becoming the Pharoh’s right-hand man.
Joseph’s story is one of constant battles and changes. But it says that everywhere Joseph went and everything he touched was fruitful because God loved him.
The Lord was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master. Potiphar noticed this and realized that the Lord was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did.Genesis 39:2-3 NLT
When Joseph was sold into slavery, God allowed him to rise up in the ranks and become head of the household. Other’s saw God in him and rose him up. When Joseph was in jail, he became the warden’s favorite, having full command of the jail.
Everything that seemed like a disaster, seemed like it was this life-stopping horrible, tragic event. Was really just God bringing Joseph closer to his purpose. And in every tragic event, somehow Joseph found a way to prosper. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. No moment was wasted.
Which made me realize that life will never be perfect. And regardless of how life is going, God has given me the ability to prosper. The power to be joyful, to be peaceful, and to recognize that GOOD things are happening even if I can’t see or feel it.
I just need to keep the faith. I can be happy no matter what happens because I have God.
Which brings me to my next point….
2. Feelings are fickle
I find myself going through many emotions and feelings each and every day. From annoyed in traffic to happy with friends. To laughing at an Instagram post, to anxious over an intrusive thought.
Feelings are ever-changing and evolving to match my current moment and as such, I cannot give so much energy to negative emotions. Or negative events because as Paul says, we need to be “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.” (Philippians 3:13, NIV)
And in order to do that, I need to forgive and move on. I can’t be stuck on why that guy tried to run me off the road during my morning commute to work. Or stuck on what Suzy meant when she texted, ‘ok’.
I can’t be a leaf in the wind, I need to be a mountain grounded in God’s grace and peace. And I realized that I was just giving up my peace way too easily. Forgetting God’s promises and just getting caught up in feelings.
It’s okay to be upset or be angry or sad. The bible says that there is a season for all of that. But it’s not okay to allow those emotions to stop you from receiving God’s abundance and peace.
When I look back on the story of Joseph, I’m sure he was sad sometimes. Upset at what his family did to him. Upset at the woman who lied and screamed rape. Even upset to be falsely jailed. I know he had to have moments of anger and of sadness. But those emotions never stopped God from blessing his life. Why? Because God loved Joseph. Just like He loves us.
And oftentimes things don’t go the way we planned. Because we need certain things, people, and events to happen to shape us into a person capable of fulfilling our purpose. So don’t get so caught up in your feelings.
Forgive others, forgive yourself, and move forward towards the prize. Keep the faith.
3. A life of abundance is a life of obedience
A while back I was doing a devotional and a line that really stood out to me the most was, “Success to God is a life of obedience.”
Oftentimes people are so caught up in finding their purpose that they forget to be obedient. Or they forget that their identity isn’t in their purpose but in God. And that purpose comes from being obedient to God. It is a byproduct of living in obedience. Want to find your purpose? So, Start communicating with God because only He can tell you.
I have a post titled “What Obedience to God Means,” which gives a pretty good definition of what it means to be obedient to Christ. In that post, I share what obedience means, and I have shared the definition below.
Obedience to God means to abide in Christ. Trusting Him to guide our lives and trusting him to train us to live righteously and to empower us to be all He created us to be.
You cannot have a life of abundance, at least not God-given abundance, if you are not living by God’s standard.
Abundance requires sacrifice and obedience. It requires unlearning the world’s meaning of abundance and adopting God’s meaning of abundance.
God did not give us peace the way the world gives peace. Through momentary pleasure and appeasing the flesh. But through His promises, His continued loyalty, and His grace.
So if He doesn’t give peace the way the world does, I don’t know why I felt God would give abundance the way the world does.
I realize now that a life of abundance is a life fully trusting in God. Hands open to blessings as he gives and takes as He pleases. It’s a life of constant and consistent communication with the Father. It’s a life of progression, not perfection.
Abundance is about letting go of old habits and accepting the truth of God as a whole. Allowing the holy spirit to guide us; filling in our gaps and holes so that we may be whole before Christ. So that we may live in peace here on earth.
What does a life of abundance look like?
A life of abundance is a life of obedience. A life that takes God’s standard as its own. It’s a life that understands it’s emotions but isn’t swayed by emotions.
A life that aggressively holds onto peace. It’s a life that is accepting of God’s blessings and accepting when God takes those blessings away. A life striving for progression, not perfection.
It’s understanding that we have cracks in our amour so that God can fill them in. We cannot do this without God, so we need to give thanks. It is a life built on God’s love. A life of trusting God and enjoying the process.
