Getting ready for the new semester but don’t know where to start? Having a hard time figuring out how to organize and schedule everything? Wanting to get into digital organization but don’t know how? Well, look no further because in this blog post we are going to go over all the major tips I have for getting digitally organized for school!
Before we jump into this post I just need to make a quick pit stop at the word, discipline. It doesn’t matter how organized we are if we don’t follow through with our plans. We need discipline over motivation in order to achieve the grades we want.
And discipline comes from a mixture of routine and motivation. So although the tips I listed below will help you get organized and ready for the new semester. The biggest thing you need above all else is discipline! So without further ado, here are the things I do to organize for the new semester.
Google Calendar

Okay, so first things first let’s plan out our semester! I used to be a paper planner, but the allure of google calendar was just too much for me to resist. I love it! It’s free and an easy way to get into digital organization.
I love the fact that I can erase things and move things easily, without having to get out the whiteout when I make mistakes.
I also love that my schedule is with me all day every day. There were often times when people would try to make plans with me. But because I didn’t carry my bulky planner everywhere, I couldn’t give any concrete answers as to my whereabouts on a certain day. But with google calendar, it’s with me 24/7 because I have the app on my phone.
Also, I love that my google calendar didn’t take forever to set up. I dabble between bullet journaling and a traditional planner such as the Erin Condren academic planner. Both are great but it became too time-consuming to maintain in the long run. I would also get discouraged if I missed a week of planning or left blank pages.
Google calendar is pretty simple to set up and once you get the hang of it you will be flying through all the steps. If you would like a tutorial on how to set it up, I have a video walking you guys through how I organize it below!
Google Keep

Next, let’s talk about Google Keep! It’s the notes part of the calendar. It’s the place where you can type out all the little details. For example, your to-do list, or your “fall bucket list” would go into google keep. Perhaps you want to put down your morning routine list or even a budget tracker. All of that stuff can be written down here for future reference.
Google keep can keep all of the info that would usually be written down as a spread in a bullet journal, or in the notes page of a planner. You can even pin certain notes to the top of the list so that you see it every time you open google keep without having to scroll to the bottom of the page.
This form of digital organization is a great way of keeping all your notes together in one convenient location.
Digital Files

As someone who was born in the millennial era, I just couldn’t let go of paper organization. I love paper, I love writing on paper, I love organizing on paper. But in reality that wasn’t the most effective way for me to organize. Especially since this new semester of college is all online.
I use my computer for everything already, plus I already switched to digital planning. So it made sense for me to switch to digital files to organize my school work as well.
On my MacBook, I made a folder called, ‘school’ and in that folder, I made two other folders called, ‘chemistry’ and ‘microbiology’ where I put all the materials given to me for those particular classes. All of my handouts are digital and all my classwork is digital so it made no sense for me to print out these documents when I didn’t have to.
You can add as many folders as you want inside your class folders to further organize yourself. But I found that I didn’t need as many as I thought. Which you will see in the video below!
The only thing I’m printing out is my notes, which will go into binders. This brings us to my next topic.
Binder orgnization
Since I stated earlier that all of the materials my professors give me are online, there’s really no need to print stuff out unless it’s absolutely necessary.
So, when it comes to my binder organization, I keep it pretty simple. I just used two dividers for each class and added in some notepaper. Originally I had planned to write out my notes for the semester, but I’m finding writing out notes to be way too time-consuming. So I’m switching to digital note-taking as well. And I will be making a post about that as well.
So I hope this post was beneficial to you all who were debating between paper organization or digital organization. Or for those who just wanted to see how others organize themselves for school.

And if this post didn’t convince you to throw out your paper planner then I suggest you upgrade your paper planner! I highly suggest the Erin Condren Life planner or the Erin Condren Academic Planner. I have used both in the past and loved them dearly. They are super durable and the paper quality is amazing! It takes watercolor like a champ. So check them out!
